What Happens During a Typical Session?

Somatic psychotherapy is a full psychotherapy treatment that integrates talking, sensing and moving as needed. Sometimes a session might look like a typical “talk” psychotherapy session, with additional gentle attention to your body. I will teach you how to “check in” by learning how to listen to what is happening in your body as you speak. This additional element of awareness is key to learning how to bring unconscious material to the surface, for you to process. Sometimes it’s as simple as paying attention to your breath; other times you might feel an impulse to investigate a gesture or movement. Sometimes you might discover how peaceful stillness is way to move forward in your life.

Nothing is expected of you in a session, except to know that you want to work toward health. We might start simply by addressing how it feels to be in your body, or how it feels to avoid it! I work with each client’s comfort level and coping style to facilitate the best strategy for improving health by balancing thoughts, emotions and bodily-felt sensations.
