So, how does it work?
Somatic psychotherapy is a full psychotherapy treatment that integrates talking, feeling emotions and sensing your body as needed. Sometimes a session might look like a typical “talk” psychotherapy session, with gentle attention to your body. I will teach you how to “check in” with yourself on a somatic level by learning how to listen to what is happening in your body as you speak.
Somatic Psychotherapy helps you to become more embodied in your life. Clients have reported feeling more grounded, centered, with more confidence and better boundaries. Others have described how their internal, judgmental dialogue has changed, and still others have expressed how developing a better relationship with themselves has helped them to build better relationships with others.
The process is simple, but not always easy. Sometimes it’s as simple as paying attention to your breath; other times you might feel an impulse to investigate a gesture or movement. Sometimes you might discover how stillness can provide a peaceful way to move forward in your life.
Nothing is expected of you in a session, except to know that you want to work toward health. We might start simply by addressing how it feels to be in your body, or how it feels to avoid it! I work with each client’s comfort level and coping style to facilitate the best strategy for improving health by balancing thoughts, emotions and bodily-felt sensations.
